Description
Keep your BMW M3 or M4 F80/F82 S55 performing consistently with the Untd. Performance Intercooler. Designed as a direct-fit upgrade to the factory air-to-water charge-cooling system, this intercooler is engineered to reduce charge-air temperatures and help prevent the heat-soak that can cause the ECU to reduce ignition timing and power.
Unlike a turbocharger or other airflow modification, an intercooler does not directly increase boost pressure. The primary benefit is thermal control and power retention. On the factory ECU, peak horsepower may change very little, but lower intake temperatures allow the S55 to maintain more consistent performance during repeated pulls, hot-weather driving, spirited use, and track sessions.
When paired with an ECU tune, the additional cooling capacity becomes even more valuable. A properly cooled charge system helps the engine maintain more consistent power as boost and cylinder pressure increase.
Key Features
- High-Performance Air-to-Water Charge Cooler:
Upgrades the factory charge-cooling system to provide improved heat rejection and more consistent intake air temperatures. - Reduced Intake Air Temperatures:
Lower charge temperatures help reduce the likelihood of heat-related ignition timing corrections, allowing the engine to maintain more consistent performance. - Improved Heat-Soak Resistance:
Particularly beneficial during repeated pulls, hot-weather driving, aggressive street use, and track sessions where the factory cooling system can become heat-soaked. - Power Consistency – Not Just Peak Power:
The primary advantage of an upgraded intercooler is the ability to hold power. On a cool first pull, peak horsepower gains may be minimal; after repeated pulls or extended high-load operation, the difference becomes much more noticeable. - Supports Higher-Power S55 Builds:
Improved charge-air cooling provides additional thermal headroom for tuned applications running increased boost and higher cylinder pressure. - No Tune Required:
The intercooler is a hardware-only cooling upgrade and can be installed on a completely stock vehicle without requiring an ECU tune. - No Boost Increase:
Unlike a turbocharger upgrade, an intercooler does not inherently increase boost pressure. Its purpose is to reduce charge-air temperatures and improve thermal consistency. - Direct-Fit Design:
Designed for the BMW S55 platform and intended as a bolt-on cooling upgrade.
Estimated Performance Gain
Intercooler upgrades should be viewed primarily as a power-retention modification rather than a peak-power modification.
On a stock ECU, the intercooler itself does not command additional boost, so peak horsepower typically changes very little. The major benefit is reduced intake temperature and less ECU intervention when the vehicle becomes heat-soaked.
| Configuration | Estimated HP Gain / Retention | Estimated Torque Gain / Retention | Estimated Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock Tune + Intercooler | ~0–5 HP peak | ~0–5 lb-ft peak | ~425–430 HP |
| Stage 1 + Factory Hardware | ~85–95 HP | ~80–95 lb-ft | ~510–520 HP |
| Stage 1/2 + Untd. Intercooler | ~95–120 HP | ~90–115 lb-ft | ~520–545 HP |
Important: The Stage 1/2 figures represent the tuned S55 platform’s potential output, not horsepower created solely by the intercooler. The additional benefit of the upgraded cooler becomes most apparent when the factory system begins to heat-soak.
In other words, the intercooler helps the vehicle retain the power the tune is already capable of producing, particularly during repeated pulls and high-temperature operation.
Actual results vary depending on ECU calibration, ambient temperature, fuel quality, vehicle condition, cooling-system configuration, and dyno methodology.
Why Upgrade?
The BMW S55 produces substantial heat under sustained boost. As charge temperatures increase, the ECU can respond by reducing ignition timing to protect the engine and control combustion temperatures. This can result in power falling off during repeated acceleration runs.
The Untd. Performance Intercooler addresses this problem by improving charge-air cooling and reducing the rate at which the system heat-soaks.
For a stock vehicle, the difference may be difficult to see on a single cool dyno pull. On a tuned S55, however, the benefits become more meaningful when the vehicle is subjected to repeated pulls, hot ambient temperatures, track driving, or sustained high-load operation.
Compatibility
Designed for BMW models equipped with the 3.0L S55 twin-turbocharged inline-six, including:
- BMW M3 F80 3.0T S55
- BMW M4 F82 3.0T S55
- BMW M2 Competition F87 3.0T S55
The M2 Competition uses a lower factory power rating than the F80/F82 M3/M4, but the same fundamental S55 charge-cooling principles apply.
Please verify your exact vehicle configuration and factory charge-cooling components before ordering.
Installation & Tuning
- Bolt-on hardware upgrade
- No ECU tune required
- Compatible with stock ECU calibration
- ECU tuning recommended only if additional performance modifications are installed
- No emissions-related modification
Important Notice
- Peak horsepower gains from an intercooler alone are typically small on a stock ECU.
- The primary benefit is lower intake temperatures and improved power consistency.
- Published horsepower figures for tuned configurations represent the overall tuned vehicle output and should not be interpreted as power generated solely by the intercooler.
- Actual results vary with ambient temperature, fuel, calibration, and supporting modifications.
- Professional installation is recommended.
