Description
Keep your MQB EA888 EVO4 2.0T performing consistently with the Untd. Performance Intercooler Kit, designed for the Audi A3/S3 8Y and Volkswagen Golf R/GTI Mk8. This upgraded air-to-air intercooler is engineered to reduce charge-air temperatures and improve resistance to heat soak, helping your vehicle maintain more consistent power during repeated pulls, hot-weather driving, and spirited use.
An intercooler does not increase boost pressure on its own, so peak horsepower on a factory ECU may change very little. The real advantage is power retention. By lowering intake air temperatures, the engine can experience less heat-related ignition timing correction, allowing the car to maintain more of the power it already produces instead of losing performance as temperatures rise.
The kit is designed as a bolt-on upgrade and does not require an ECU tune or generate additional fault codes when installed correctly.
Key Features
- High-Performance Air-to-Air Intercooler:
Upgrades the factory charge-air cooling system to provide improved heat rejection and lower intake temperatures. - Reduced Intake Air Temperatures:
Helps lower charge-air temperatures under boost, improving thermal efficiency and reducing the likelihood of ECU timing corrections caused by excessive heat. - Improved Heat-Soak Resistance:
Particularly beneficial during repeated acceleration runs, hot-weather driving, track use, and other high-load conditions where the factory intercooler can become heat-soaked. - Power Consistency – Not Just Peak Power:
The main benefit of an upgraded intercooler is the ability to hold power. A cool first dyno pull may show only a small difference, while repeated pulls can demonstrate a much larger advantage. - Supports Tuned EA888 EVO4 Builds:
Provides improved charge-air temperature control for vehicles running increased boost and higher airflow through ECU tuning. - Bolt-On Design:
Designed as a direct-fit style upgrade for the MQB EVO4 platform without requiring an ECU tune. - No Tune Required:
The intercooler can be installed on a stock vehicle and used with the factory ECU calibration. - No Emissions Modification:
The intercooler does not remove or modify catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, or other emissions-control components.
Estimated Performance Gain
An intercooler should primarily be considered a thermal-management and power-retention upgrade rather than a standalone horsepower modification.
On the factory ECU, the intercooler does not command additional boost, so peak horsepower typically changes very little. The benefit becomes more noticeable when intake temperatures rise and the ECU begins reducing ignition timing.
| Configuration | Estimated HP Gain / Retention | Estimated Torque Gain / Retention | Estimated Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock Tune + Intercooler | ~0–5 HP peak | ~0–5 lb-ft peak | ~315–320 HP |
| Stage 1 Tune | ~55–75 HP | ~55–75 lb-ft | ~370–390 HP |
| Stage 1/2 + Untd. Intercooler | ~63–93 HP | ~60–90 lb-ft | ~378–408 HP |
Important: The Stage 1 and Stage 2 figures represent overall tuned-platform output and should not be interpreted as horsepower created solely by the intercooler.
The additional benefit of the Untd. Performance intercooler becomes most apparent once the factory cooler begins to heat-soak. On a cool first pull, the difference may be relatively small; during repeated pulls, hot-weather operation, or track use, improved charge-air cooling can help the vehicle maintain more consistent output.
Actual results vary depending on ECU calibration, ambient temperature, fuel quality, turbocharger, intake/exhaust configuration, and vehicle condition.
Why Upgrade?
The factory intercooler is designed to provide adequate charge-air cooling for OEM power levels and normal street driving. When the EA888 EVO4 is subjected to repeated high-load operation or increased boost from ECU tuning, intake temperatures can rise significantly.
As charge temperatures increase, the ECU can reduce ignition timing to protect the engine and control combustion temperatures. This can result in power falling off during repeated pulls.
The Untd. Performance Intercooler Kit helps combat this heat buildup by providing improved charge-air cooling. The result is not necessarily a dramatic increase on the first pull, but rather the ability to retain more consistent horsepower and torque as temperatures rise.
This makes the upgrade particularly useful for tuned Golf R, GTI, S3, and A3 applications that regularly see spirited driving, repeated acceleration, or track use.
Compatibility
Designed for MQB vehicles equipped with the 2.0T EA888 EVO4, including:
- Volkswagen Golf R Mk8 2022+
- Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8 2022+
- Audi S3 8Y 2022+
- Audi A3 8Y 2022+
The Audi S3 8Y uses the same fundamental EA888 EVO4 platform and can experience similar thermal-management benefits.
Because the Golf GTI starts with a lower factory power output, its overall tuned output and gains will differ from Golf R and S3 applications.

- No ECU tune required
- Compatible with stock ECU calibration
- No catalyst or O2 sensor modification
- No emissions-system removal
- ECU tuning recommended when paired with additional performance modifications
- Professional installation recommended
Important Notice
- An intercooler does not increase boost pressure by itself.
- Peak horsepower gains on a stock ECU are expected to be modest.
- The primary benefit is lower intake temperatures and improved power consistency.
- Tuned output figures represent the overall vehicle’s potential output, not power generated solely by the intercooler.
- Actual results vary depending on ambient temperature, fuel, calibration, turbocharger, and supporting modifications.
- Horsepower and torque figures are estimated and not guaranteed.
- Always verify vehicle fitment before installation.
