Description
Keep your VAG DSG transmission operating at controlled temperatures with the Untd. Performance Transmission Oil Cooler Kit, designed for 7-speed DQ350, DQ380, and DQ381 DSG transmissions found across a wide range of Audi and Volkswagen performance applications.
As power and torque increase, so does the amount of heat generated by the DSG transmission. During repeated pulls, aggressive street driving, track use, or extended high-load operation, excessive transmission fluid temperatures can reduce shift consistency and cause the transmission to activate protective strategies. Adding dedicated external oil cooling provides additional thermal capacity to help maintain more stable DSG fluid temperatures during demanding driving.
Key Features
- Dedicated DSG Transmission Cooling: Adds additional cooling capacity to help control DSG fluid temperatures under high-load conditions.
- Designed for High-Power Builds: An ideal supporting modification for tuned vehicles producing substantially more torque than stock.
- Improved Thermal Stability: Helps maintain more consistent transmission temperatures during repeated acceleration, spirited driving, and track sessions.
- Protects Shift Consistency: Excessive DSG temperatures can contribute to torque reduction and slower or less consistent shifting; additional cooling helps the transmission maintain a more stable operating environment.
- Supports Clutch Pack Performance: Better temperature control helps maintain the operating conditions required by the DSG clutch packs and hydraulic system.
- External Air-to-Oil Cooling: Provides additional heat rejection through a dedicated cooler positioned in the airflow.
- Works Alongside Factory Cooling: Depending on the specific installation, an auxiliary cooler can supplement the factory transmission cooling system rather than replacing its basic temperature-control function.
- Ideal for Street & Track Use: Particularly beneficial for high-power vehicles, hot climates, repeated pulls, and track-driven applications.
- Complete Cooling Solution: Designed as a supporting modification for vehicles where increased engine output places additional thermal demands on the DSG.
How It Helps
The DSG transmission does more than simply transfer power from the engine to the wheels. Its fluid is responsible for critical functions including clutch control, hydraulic operation, lubrication, and heat management. Maintaining appropriate fluid temperature is therefore important for consistent operation.
When DSG temperatures rise during sustained high-load operation, the transmission can begin protecting itself by reducing torque and altering shift behavior. An auxiliary oil cooler increases the system’s ability to reject heat, helping the transmission remain within a more controlled temperature range.
Estimated Performance Gain
A DSG oil cooler is not a direct horsepower-producing modification. Its primary purpose is thermal management and maintaining performance consistency.
On a stock vehicle, there may be virtually no measurable peak horsepower increase. On tuned and high-power vehicles, however, improved transmission cooling can help retain power and torque that may otherwise be reduced as temperatures climb.
| Configuration | Estimated HP Gain / Retained Power | Estimated Torque Gain / Retained Torque | Primary Benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock / Mild Use | +0–2 HP | +0–2 lb-ft | Improved thermal stability |
| Stage 1 | +0–5 HP retained | +0–5 lb-ft retained | More consistent DSG operation |
| Stage 2 | +0–10 HP retained | +0–10 lb-ft retained | Reduced heat-related performance loss |
| High-Power / Track | +5–20 HP retained | +5–20 lb-ft retained | Improved power consistency under sustained load |
Important: These are estimated retained-power figures, not horsepower created directly by the cooler. Actual results depend on DSG calibration, engine output, ambient temperature, driving conditions, fluid condition, vehicle configuration, and how quickly the transmission accumulates heat.
Why Upgrade?
The factory DSG cooling system is designed around the vehicle’s original power and thermal requirements. As engine torque increases through ECU tuning, turbocharger upgrades, and other modifications, the DSG has to transfer significantly more energy through the clutch packs and drivetrain.
High-power and hard-driven MQB vehicles can therefore place substantially greater thermal demands on the transmission. Dedicated auxiliary cooling can help reduce this thermal load and maintain more consistent operation. Aftermarket DQ381 cooler systems, for example, are designed specifically to supplement the factory oil/water cooling system with additional air/oil cooling.

Tuning & Installation
No engine ECU tune is required to install a transmission oil cooler.
For vehicles running a DSG/TCU tune, Stage 2 software, increased clutch pressure, or substantially higher torque output, additional transmission cooling can be an important supporting modification.
Professional installation is strongly recommended. DSG oil systems require correct fluid routing and proper fluid-level procedures. Incorrect fluid level or contamination can negatively affect transmission operation and longevity. Installation documentation for comparable DQ381 systems specifically recommends professional installation and following the correct VAG fluid-filling procedure.
⚠️ Important Notice
The estimated horsepower and torque figures are provided as general estimates and represent potentially retained performance, not direct power gains produced by the transmission cooler.
The primary benefits of this upgrade are lower transmission temperatures, improved thermal stability, more consistent shifting, and reduced heat-related performance loss during demanding driving.
Always verify transmission code and vehicle compatibility before installation. Proper DSG fluid level and service procedures must be followed after modifying the transmission cooling system.
