Description
Keep your BMW M5 F90/F93 and M8 S63 4.4L V8 performing consistently with the Untd. Performance Intercooler. Designed to improve charge-air cooling on the twin-turbocharged S63 platform, this intercooler helps reduce intake air temperatures and combat heat soak during repeated pulls, aggressive street driving, and track use.
An intercooler does not increase boost pressure by itself, so peak horsepower on the factory ECU may change very little. The primary benefit is power retention. By reducing charge-air temperatures, the engine can maintain more consistent ignition timing and airflow, helping prevent the performance drop that can occur as the factory cooling system becomes heat-soaked.
For tuned S63 applications, improved charge-air cooling becomes even more important as boost and airflow increase.
Key Features
- High-Performance Charge-Air Cooling:
Designed to improve heat rejection and reduce intake air temperatures on the BMW S63 twin-turbo V8. - Reduced Intake Air Temperatures:
Helps maintain lower charge temperatures under sustained boost, reducing the likelihood of heat-related timing corrections. - Improved Heat-Soak Resistance:
Particularly beneficial during repeated pulls, hot-weather driving, highway acceleration, spirited driving, and track use. - Power Consistency – Not Just Peak Power:
The primary advantage of an upgraded intercooler is the ability to hold power. While a cool first pull may show only a small difference, repeated high-load operation can reveal a much larger advantage. - Designed for High-Boost S63 Applications:
Provides additional thermal headroom for tuned vehicles running increased boost and higher airflow. - Supports Higher-Power Builds:
An upgraded intercooler is an important supporting modification for Stage 1, Stage 2, and higher-output S63 configurations. - Direct-Fit Performance Upgrade:
Designed specifically around the BMW S63 platform for a straightforward upgrade over the factory charge-air cooling system. - No ECU Tune Required:
The intercooler can be installed on a stock vehicle without requiring an ECU calibration.
Estimated Performance Gain
An intercooler should be viewed primarily as a thermal-management and power-retention upgrade, rather than a standalone horsepower modification.
Because the intercooler does not directly increase boost, peak power on a stock ECU may change very little. Its real advantage appears when charge temperatures rise and the ECU begins reducing ignition timing or otherwise managing engine output.
| Configuration | Estimated HP Gain / Retention | Estimated Torque Gain / Retention | Estimated Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock Tune + Intercooler | ~0–5 HP peak | ~0–5 lb-ft peak | Near factory output |
| Stage 1 Tune + Intercooler | ~5–15 HP retained | ~5–15 lb-ft retained | Dependent on calibration |
| Stage 2 / High-Boost + Intercooler | ~10–25 HP retained | ~10–25 lb-ft retained | Dependent on calibration |
Important: These figures represent estimated power retention rather than horsepower created solely by the intercooler. The benefit becomes more noticeable during repeated pulls, hot ambient conditions, and sustained high-load operation.
Actual results vary depending on ECU calibration, ambient temperature, fuel quality, turbocharger configuration, intake/exhaust modifications, and vehicle condition.
Why Upgrade?
The BMW S63 produces substantial heat under sustained boost. During aggressive driving, charge-air temperatures can rise quickly, increasing the thermal load on the engine and reducing the ability of the factory cooling system to maintain consistent intake temperatures.
As temperatures increase, the ECU can reduce ignition timing and modify engine operation to protect the engine. This can cause power to fall off during repeated acceleration runs.
The Untd. Performance Intercooler is designed to improve charge-air temperature control, helping the S63 maintain more consistent performance throughout repeated high-load operation.
For tuned M5 and M8 applications, the benefit becomes even more important because increased boost and airflow generate additional heat.
